The Larry Wirth Collection comprises sixty-five sculptures and paintings produced by Jamaican Intuitive Mallica “Kapo” Reynolds, OD, (1911-1989), acquired with assistance from the Government of Jamaica. Recognized as a comprehensive overview of Kapo’s work, spanning the early 1950s to the mid 1970s, the collection was originally assembled and owned by Larry Wirth, an American businessman who had migrated to Jamaica during the 1950s and operated the now closed Stony Hill Hotel. The collection was purchased from his widow Yvonne sometime after his death.
The Larry Wirth collection exemplifies the depth and complexity of Kapo’s artistic output as one of Jamaica’s premier Intuitive artists. The collection is also critical in demonstrating the cultural and social value of works created by the Jamaican Intuitives. Prior to its acquisition by the NGJ, several pieces from this collection had been featured in nationally-focused exhibitions including Ten Jamaican Sculptors (1975) and Intuitive Eye (1979).
