Hurvin Anderson

FROM THE ARTIST

In the exhibition I present two new works that speak to the theme of ‘Pressure.’

In Ocean View (Featured Work), I reflect on tourism in Jamaica. This painting is of a hotel construction site on the North Coast at which the building work is half-finished; the jungle is creeping over the concrete and almost subsumes the structure. Over the years Jamaica has been mined for natural resources, for minerals, and for sugar, and now the economy is chiefly reliant on tourism. There is a pressure there, a need to succeed, to keep building, and yet the construction has stagnated.

Film Still (Second Featured Work) is a continuation of my explorative work on security grilles. Over many years I have returned to images of these grilles seen on a visit to Trinidad in 2002. My recurring interest lies beyond their decorative variation and in the symbolism as an outward representation of the internalized fear, malcontent, division, and economic hardship.

The complete overview of Hurvin Anderson’s featured works can be found in the Kingston Biennial 2022: Pressure Catalogue, which is available for sale in the NGJ Gift Shop.
