From The Artist
My painting Time, Place and Us, aims to present to Jamaican people a reflection of themselves, to others, another perspective on the tropical paradise. The painting is a triptych that portrays three individuals, all clad in business formal attire. The center panel depicts a seated man; the left and right panels depict a woman and a man, respectively, both standing. Each looks directly at the viewer with a proud stare. The scene also depicts a still-life arrangement of objects that enriches the contextual narrative of the work in its entirety. Additionally, this still-life arrangement portrays objects that are significant to the material and popular culture of Jamaica, including the peruke, Clarks shoes, a pistol, an audio playing device, a model seventeenth-century ship, a table cannon, a peeled lemon, and a tea set. There is also an image in the background of the middle panel that replicates the armor that is part of the Jamaican coat of arms. The work, therefore, sets out to mimic the current Jamaican society, where capitalism and glut and disenfranchisement of the everyday people and the Maas Toms forecasts an inevitable socio-political implosion.
