The A.D. Scott collection comprises works of art donated to the National Gallery of Jamaica by renowned Master Builder Ainsworth David Scott, OD (1912-2004). It includes works by Carl Abrahams, Gloria Escoffrey, Albert Huie, Alvin Marriot, David Pottinger, Barrington Watson, Eugene Hyde, Osmond Watson and Karl Parboosingh, among others. Considered to be one of the most inveterate Jamaican art collectors of his time, A.D. Scott’s private collection was once reputed to be the largest of its kind in the island. So much so, that the collection at the NGJ is one of two major donations of art made to local public institutions (the other being an equally substantial collection made to the University of the West Indies, Mona).
Providing an insightful exposition of the evolution of the Jamaican artist during the years preceding and following the achievement Jamaican Independence 1962, the A.D. Scott Collection at the NGJ demonstrate a variety of artistic executions in paint and sculpture which reflects the experimentation of several main stream Jamaican artists, as they adapted several international styles to create representations of Jamaican themes and subject matter.
