Today we celebrate museums—spaces that facilitate learning about history, culture and heritage, as well preserve cultural objects and information.
In Jamaica we have a variety of museums that each cater to their own niche. At the National Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ) we focus on Jamaican and Caribbean art and related material. These artworks can come in a number of mediums, such as paintings, sculptures, digital works and more. We also house a small library centred around art as well as other related documentation to preserve our cultural knowledge for generations to come.
The NGJ falls under the Institute of Jamaica (IoJ) and is one of the many museums they are parent to.
Other museums within the IoJ are:
- Liberty Hall: The Legacy of Marcus Garvey
- Jamaica Music Museum
- Natural History Museum of Jamaica
- National Museum of Jamaica
- The People’s Museum of Craft and Technology
